The long term debt situation is unsustainable. Since 2001, the debt held by the public has increased dramatically, rising from 33% of GDP to more than 67% of GDP in 2011. Under realistic assumptions, the debt will reach 84% of the economy by 2021, 107% by 2030, 149% by 2040 and continue on an unsustainable course. The last time that debt was more than 100 percent of the economy was at the end of World War II.
